A Well-Dressed Midget Walks into a Bar…

Although a large number of devoted David Lynch fans may have sadly given up on their hopes of seeing a new and inexplicably surreal mind boggler like Blue Velvet or Lost Highway in the next few years (myself included), it would appear that his cult following should be getting the next best thing this coming fall. A Lynch-inspired nightclub is set to open in Paris in September, appropriately named Silencio, after the fictional night club that holds one of the most beautiful and iconic scenes in his 2001 masterpiece Mulholland Drive. The film, which tells a sordid and dreamlike tale of competition and betrayal in the Hollywood scene, is complete with hit-men, totally abstract – and quite possibly, meaningless – symbolism, a short Billy Ray Cyrus vignette, and a series of consecutive ʻWait…did that really just happen?ʼ moments, that only a genius like Lynch can get away with in a ʻpopularʼ film. If experiencing Silencio is anything like being actively exposed to a film like Mulholland Drive, then one could assume its impact might be a bit hallucinogenic, and possibly terrifying, but I would imagine itʼs well worth it.

Lynch, himself, is designing the interior which will fill a theatre, art gallery, concert hall, restaurant and bar. Details at this point are limited, but now, at the very least, we all have a great excuse to revisit the fantastically bizarre world of Mulholland Drive, and can imagine just how awe-inducing this new Parisian club is destined to be.

That being said, us Lynch fans west of the Atlantic should probably start saving up for a ticket to the Charles de Gaulle Airport over the next few months.

After months of anticipation we could barely hold our excitement on the day of this colorful, rambunctious evening. In the company of colleagues from the beauty and fashion industries, TV personalities as well as friends and family, author Lora Condon officially launched her book SPA WARS: The Ugly Truth About The Beauty Industry on a night filled with glamour, joy and delicious treats from Empanada Mama, Butternuts Beer and the royal Château de Chambord (actually, throw some glitter in that equation to get a better mental image).

Hosted by Sex and the City’s Patricia Field and the Women’s Mafia at the House of Field (known for its fashion extravaganzas) to benefit GLAAD, people walking by wondered what the fuss what all about “Are they filming a movie?”, “Is it a rave?” were some remarkable guesses. In actuality, guests were enjoying something much better: Shopping at special rates, Music by DJ Sharri Model, makeup by Alicia Oliveri, Salon Services by the renowned Salon at Patricia Field and a Fierce Photo Contest with photographer Montana.

This past Saturday March 5th, Philip Pelusi in collaboration with Be-Cause, hosted the sold-out Be-Cause Charity Kick-Off event, all proceeds going to Beauty Changes Lives (BCL).

Women’s Mafia (WM):
Looking back at everything you have accomplished professionally, was this the vision you had when you started your first hair studio 46 years ago?

Philip Pelusi (PP):  To be the best that I could be.  I opened my first salón when I was 20 years old.  At that point I was only concerned about paying my bills.  But I instinctively knew there was more to come.

WM:
How do you think the beauty industry has changed since then?

PP:  Trends have changed, but the art of haircutting and the principals of growing a business never change.  Each generation brings a different attitude and is reflected in the design.  There will always be levels of good design and bad design within each generation or within each decade.

WM:
What do you consider to be your greatest achievement so far?

PP: It is a work in progress, but for now, achieving the first USDA hair care body care product and introducing it to the beauty industry

WM:
We recently had the pleasure of attending the event you co-hosted with Be-Cause to raise funds for Beauty Changes Lives. Can you tell us about this charity and why you got involved?

PP:  The beauty industry needs to meet the demands of the marketplace consumer. Right now there are not enough qualified cosmetologists to meet the consumers demand.  There are great opportunities ahead.  Through Beauty Changes Lives, we are making our profession available to deserving students and help give them a head start.

WM:
You and your team have styled for various fashion shows for Womens Mafia and other shows during Fashion Week which is an open window to notice hair styling trends, can you share some of the ones you think are going to be most popular for Spring and Summer 2011?

PP:  For cutting trends I see short layered cuts gamín to ear length.  Styling trends — I see volume, but natural looking.  The emphasis is on healthy shiny hair.  Also, on the quality of hair.  Staying away from the blowdryers and flat irons is on the rise.

Great looks to try:  hair crimped and braided and woven in interesting ways.  For evening:  wear a chignon with an extreme side part.

Hair color will showcase sun kissed ends and look very deliberately grown out.  Highlights are more dimensional but don’t look highlighted or painted on.  The look is subtle and sophisticated.
